Makhura: Health in Gauteng needs complete overhaul
Updated | By Samkelo Maseko
Gauteng Premier David Makhura has warned of another tragedy similar to the Life Esidimeni crisis if the health department in the province isn’t completely overhauled.
Makhura presented his office’s 2017/18 Budget Vote in the provincial legislature on Wednesday.
Speaking on the sidelines, Makhura blamed the shortfalls in the health sector on officials in the department.
"There are issues at clinics pertaining to management. Those in charge of the institutions of health, whether it is provincial or regional or the hospitals themselves, we need a shake up," he says.
Makhura says senior officials in the department must account for the state of the health services in the province.
He says he is more than willing to fire officials who are not up to task.
"That is part of the overhaul planned for the next two years. Everybody is working towards 2019 when our term ends," Makhura says.
