Makhura to receive findings of study on alcohol ban
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
Gauteng Premier David Makhura is expected to receive
the findings of a study of the effects of alcohol amid
the surge in the number of Covid-19 infections in
the province.
Gauteng, along with the Western and Eastern Cape, have questioned the unbanning of the sale of alcohol as the three provinces struggle to contain the number of infections.
The premier’s spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga says Makhura asked Health MEC Bandile Masuku to conduct research on the influence of alcohol sales.
“The premier has manded the MEC of Health to do a bit of research on the real effects of alcohol in so far of increasing patients in the hospital. Gauteng opted to do this, so that we don’t necessarily take decisions on emotions, but actually whatever decision that we take are based on facts."
“We just have to check how far has the MEC gone with the study but also remember, this is the national disaster, so the Gauteng and other provinces can always lobby the national government because it is the one making rules. Once we actually advance an argument, issues must be based on facts.”
To date the province has recorded 12 193 cases of Covid-19 and 87 fatalities.
