Malema: NPA’s dragging of assault case ‘exposes incompetency’

EFF leader Julius Malema has slammed the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for the delays in the assault case against him and fellow party member Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

Malema and Ndlozi appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court again on Thursday.

The two are facing charges related to the assault of a police officer at the funeral of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in April 2018.

Addressing party supporters shortly after the hearing, Malema says the NPA should be ashamed.

“They must be ashamed that a common assault case can last for four years, it exposes the incompetence of our courts, it exposes the incompetence of the NPA – because well-oiled machinery in the NPA would have pushed this case and finished it.

“What we said to them today is, bring it on, close your case – there is no case to be answered by the EFF in court.

They are scared that we are going to show them that they are incompetent and they are using this court to settle political differences.”

He believes the NPA should rather focus its resources on addressing the backlog in cases.

“There is a backlog of cases in the judiciary but people are keeping a court occupied, for four years on common assault case, because they must find Malema guilty somehow. They will never succeed because we never attacked anyone, we defended ourselves, especially when we were attacked by a white Afrikaner, we had to defend ourselves, we did it that day, we will do it the next day and we will do it forever,” said Malema.

The case has been postponed until 6 May.
