Malema: 'We will emerge victorious' as assault ruling set for September
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
EFF leader Julius Malema says he is confident he will be acquitted on charges of assaulting a police officer at the funeral of struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in 2018.
Malema and EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday for allegedly assaulting senior police officer Johannes Venter.
The incident, which was caught on CCTV footage, shows the two politicians pushing Venter from the cemetery gate and yelling at Venter.
During his testimony on Friday, Ndlozi said Venter broke the law by preventing them from accessing the Fourways Memorial Park cemetery.
"He violated the law, we know today that we have the right to be there. He may not have known at that instance, but he knows subsequently. We had the right to mourn. The videos [CCTV footage] were released for our humiliation."
Addressing the media outside the court, Malema said the state's case is weak.
"From the onset, there was no case and this will be ruled in our favour. The [physical contact on Venter] was a self-defence, we defended our dignity and the right to mourn. We were mourning and it was an emotional day."
The matter has been postponed to 29 September for judgment.
