Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure in Gauteng, Jacob Mamabolo says he met with representatives of all five municipalities in the province who work on a comprehensive plan to deal with road fatalities ahead of the December holidays.

This comes as Transport Month kicks off on Tuesday and in the wake of the recent horror crash north of Pretoria that claimed the lives of seven people.

Mamabolo believes extraordinary interventions and a new paradigm shift are needed to reduce the rate of fatalities on the roads.

"If this continues unabated, it means we are going to lose more lives on our roads. We don't think that there is a single intervention that can help - that is why a multi-discipline strategy is required," says Mamabolo.

Mamabolo believes the official set of interventions will be realised at the end of Transport Month which will last through October.

Mamabolo has admitted that the current road strategies are not having the necessary impact.

"It just cannot be correct that our roads have turned against the people, in a sense that people are dying on the roads."
