Man in court for burning girlfriend with paraffin

A man appeared in Witbank Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for pouring paraffin on his girlfriend.

Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Mpumalanga Monica Nyuswa says 35-year-old Kholofelo Nonyane had a heated argument with his 20-year-old girlfriend in their rented room in in December 2019.
"He allegedly poured paraffin on her, set her alight and locked her in their room. When the victim woke up, she screamed for help from other tenants who assisted.
"Upon realizing that is badly burned, the police and medical personnel were summoned and the victim was taken to hospital," Nyuswa said.

Nyuswa says the man, who is facing a charge of attempted murder, went into hiding after the incident but was found near Bushbuckridge.
The case postponed to 20 July for a bail application.
