The Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 45-year-old man to 20 years in prison for raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter.
After raping the young girl the man fled to the Free State where was later arrested.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says the man was sentenced to additional five years for sexual assault which will run concurrently.
"The accused sexually abused the girl from the age of 11, during the period when the complainant’s mother (accused’s wife) was ill. She eventually found the courage to tell her mother what the accused did to her.
"Magistrate Anneline Afrika, remarked that the accused failed to carry the family, especially the minor girl at the time when his wife was sick, but instead chose to use the situation to advance his selfish interests."
Before sentencing, prosecutor Kelebogile Sibi argued that the accused took advantage of his wife’s illness to prey on an innocent child, that looked up to him for love and protection.
