Man handed life sentence for raping girl (5)
The National Prosecuting Authority in Gauteng's spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says the man lived in the same yard as the girl.
She says the girl's cousin witnessed the incident and reported it to the mother.
"He pleaded guilty to all charges in court. He further asked the court to deviate from imposing the prescribed minimum sentence, because he has two children, aged 16 and 18, that he needs to take care of.
"The prosecutor, Refiloe Neluonde, read to the record the Victim Impact Statement prepared by the social worker, that the child suffered as a result of what the man did. The mother had to remove the shack because it reminded the child of what had happened and made her cry," said Mahanjana.
