Police in Limpopo have arrested a suspect in connection with the smuggling of illegal cigarettes at the Groblersbrug border post.
The man was arrested on Sunday.
Limpopo police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says two trucks, which were fully loaded with what police believe to be illegal cigarettes, were stopped at the border post.
The cigarettes are estimated to be worth more than R1.4 million.
“According to the information received, the two suspect were on the border of Groblersbrug waiting to enter into South Africa from Botswana when members on duty became suspicious and conducted a search on the two trucks. They ultimately found these cigarettes fully loaded in the trucks,” says Ledwaba.
One of the suspects managed to flee, while the other man is expected to appear in Phalala Magistrate’s Court today on Tuesday.
“It is not exactly clear as to where the cigarettes were headed to", adds Ledwaba.
