A man arrested in connection with the mass murder of a Pietermaritzburg family has made his first appearance in court.
Ten members of the Memela family were shot execution-style at their home in Imbali on Friday morning.
The suspected gunmen were traced to a nearby house, where a shootout with police ensued.
One suspect was killed, another was wounded and remains in hospital under police guard, one was arrested, and a fourth managed to flee and remains at large.
KZN NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara says the 26-year-old man who appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Monday cannot be named at this stage as identity parades still need to take place.
"He faces ten counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder as well as charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The matter was remanded to 5 May 2023 for bail investigation."
