Police spokesperson LtCol Moatshe Ngoepe said it is alleged that the man's body was found at the local soccer ground in Muledane village outside Thohoyandou in the early hours of Monday.

Ngoepe said the body of the deceased was found by a passer-by with multiple stab wounds and his nose, lips and both ears were missing.

"The police's preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased might have been killed somewhere and dragged to this scene. The motive behind this killing is unknown but ritual related murder may not be ruled out," said Ngoepe.

Ngoepe said community members have meanwhile started blocking roads in the area, but Public Order Policing members have been deployed to monitor the situation.

"The police would like to request members of the community to be calm and give us a space to investigate this case in full."
