Rails used to transport workers underground at the shaft had fallen, leaving thousands of miners trapped underground on Tuesday evening.

All miners were brought back to the surface after an inspection was done to ensure they could be hoisted up safely.

Mantashe reminded mining companies of the importance of health and safety.

"Despite strides made on health and safety thus far, we should not be complacent.

We are committed to the goal of zero harm at work. Every worker must return home safe."
