Mantashe: 'Diesel turbines putting pressure on Eskom'
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
Minister of Mineral and Energy Resources Gwede Mantashe says the use of diesel as peak source of energy at Eskom is putting more pressure on the embattled power utility.

This comes after Eskom announced the implementation of stage 2 load shedding until Thursday to enable the embattled power utility to replenish diesel for their open cycle gas turbines.

Mantashe spoke at the opening of the 4-day Investing in African Mining Indaba 2020 in Cape Town on Monday morning.
Mantashe used his keynote address to address the challenges facing Eskom.
"Let me add, one of the issues, challenges that are putting pressure on Eskom is the question of using diesel as peak source of energy," says Mantashe.
He adds that the government is in the process of gazetting a revised Electricity Regulation Act that will allow self-generation of electricity.
"Our view is that if all those businesses that provide diesel to Eskom can be converted into gas turbines, we will save a lot of money."
"Following concurrence by energy regulator, NERSA, we are in the process of gazetting a revised Schedule 2 of the Electricity Regulation Act; which will enable self-generation."
