Maphatsoe: Leaked emails do not implicate Zuma

The Umkhonto We Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) says there is a danger that some of the leaked emails, appearing to implicate the Gupta family in state capture, could be fake.

MKMVA chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe briefed the media ahead of their national conference this weekend.

Maphatsoe believes the leaking of the emails were timed to try and convince ANC National Executive Committee members to vote against President Jacob Zuma during their last meeting.

He says it is clear that people with a regime change agenda are hard at work trying to remove the president from office.

“Coming from the background of a soldiers, we know that the people behind these emails are for regime change. They are building a perception that the ANC and President Zuma are corrupt,” says Maphatsoe.

He says none of the emails have implicated the president in any wrongdoing.

“In all these leaks, there is not even a single email that implicates the President. But all the headlines say ‘Zuma, Zuma, Zuma’ and not Duduzane Zuma, so that society must say Zuma is corrupt and he must step down. What will happen with those emails is that 2 or 3 of them will be fake.”

Maphatsoe has admitted in the past that the MKMVA approached the Gupta family to assist them with business opportunities.

Maphatsoe says President Zuma has been invited to address the MKMVA congress this weekend.

“We thank President Zuma for accepting our invite to deliver the opening address at the conference. All ANC structures and leagues of the ANC will be present at the conference. Delegates must nominate and elect those who are truly genuinely to the implementation of the freedom charter,” he says.
