Mashaba tells youth to vote ‘to stop the rot’

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says only through voting will young people be able to change the course of South African history and ensure a more prosperous future.

Mashaba spoke to two young women who were registering at the Lesidi-Laka voting stating in Kaalfontein, north of Johannesburg on Saturday.

“I am actually quite inspired and proud to see the youth, because one thing that South Africa has failed (in) is the youth, in particular the black youth. So it is up to you to stop the rot that is happening around. You cannot allow this nonsense to continue, but it must happen through a democratic process,” Mashaba said.

Mashaba was part of a Democratic Alliance (DA) campaign to encourage South Africans to register to vote and ensure their addresses are on the voters roll.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is holding its first a registration weekend in the run-up to next year’s elections, where voters can update their details on the voters roll as well as register at their nearest voting station.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane was also present at Lesedi-Laka Primary School, and said youth must register so they can vote for change.

“These are young people who are unemployed as you can see the social conditions are such that 24 years on, we have had the government that simply hasn’t made any of the advances that we need. Too many people are unemployed and now they are introducing VAT to punish our people, so we are saying to them, look it is about their future and they must come and register to vote for change.”
