Mashatile assures MPs all Sassa beneficiaries paid
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Deputy President Paul Mashatile has told the National Council of Provinces that all South African Social Security Agency beneficiaries have been paid.
Mashatile answered questions in Parliament on Thursday.
Last month about 600,000 South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grant beneficiaries were left with empty pockets due to a technical glitch at Postbank.
Most beneficiaries have been withdrawing their money from ATMs and retailers due to challenges at various Post Office branches throughout the country.
Mashatile says the Office of the President is regularly briefed on the progress reports from Ministers of Communications and Social Development.
"Government remains fully committed to timely and seamless payment of social grants to all beneficiaries, we can assure the South African public, that the matter is receiving necessary attention.
"The president receives regular progress report from the minsters, we are pleased to say all the failed transactions have now been reversed and all affected beneficiaries have been refunded."
Mashatile also apologised to the affected beneficiaries.
"We regret the recent glitches in the payment of grants that affected several grant recipients. We fully understand the distress and suffering that resulted from this system glitch, which left recipients, especially older people, unable to access their grants on their SASSA Post Bank cards."
"The September system glitches have since been resolved, and all social grant beneficiaries affected by the payment delays have now received their grant payments."
