Mashatile: Need to improve teachers’ salaries, working conditions
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Deputy President Paul Mashatile says there is an urgent need to improve the remuneration and working conditions of teachers.

Mashatile addressed the International Task Force on Teachers Policy Forum in Sandton on Monday.
He urged governments worldwide to invest in digital technology for educators to enhance teaching and emphasised the importance of empowering teachers for the future workforce, fostering creativity, and providing competitive compensation to recognise their achievement.
“It is critical that we never lose sight of the fact that we are currently living in a digital age, and we must also ensure that our educators can effectively utilise new technologies to remain relevant and efficient in this current digital age,” said Mashatile.
“This situation has necessitated the Further Education and Training Band teachers to migrate to the senior phase and teach grade 7 and 8 classes. Hence, we have teachers who are teaching out of phases and grades.
“In South Africa, we have the Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme, which is meant to attract young teachers into the teaching profession based on the needs identified in terms of the Education Management Information Systems. To improve teacher salaries and working conditions. Use contracted teachers to deal with immediate needs,” added Mashatile.
