Massive gold heist at North West mine
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Gold worth millions of rands has been stolen at a Harmony Gold plant in North West.
An unknown number of armed men gained access to the Kalgold mine in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
According to Harmony Gold's spokesperson, Sihle Maake, the exact quantity of gold stolen is still unclear.
But the Hawks' Tlangelani Rikhotso says they believe at least 12 kilogram of gold disappeared during the robbery.
"We do know that it was stolen at the smelter house through a breach of security whereby our plant security was ambushed and tied up. Plant security was then called for backup but upon responding they too were then ambushed," says Maake.
Nobody was injured during the attack but the workers who were on duty at the time are receiving trauma counselling.
Rikhotso says it seems to have been a professional hit.
"The suspects were heavily armed but as far as to confirm they have military training, we can't say but they do seem to be quite professional at this."
