Mathabatha hails construction of new Polokwane hospital
Updated | By Lesetja Makhura
Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha has officially handed over the site where the construction will take place of the new Limpopo Central Academic Hospital in Polokwane.
The project will cost both the provincial government and the National Department of Health about R4.4 billion.
Mathabatha estimates that the project will create about 1200 jobs at "particular stages”.
"This project is not going to be critical for the people of Limpopo only, and it is going to be very critical also for the Southern African Development Community.
"We don't have a hospital of this size in this area, you talk from Zim, from Zambia and the likes - you don't really have a hospital of this size," said Mathabatha.
The premier believes the new hospital will not only change the health landscape in the province but also Limpopo’s economy.
The project will take approximately four years to complete.
"The fact that we have started building, the fact that the site has now been technically handed over to the contractor, it says there is light at the end of the tunnel," added Mathabatha
