Nurses, teachers first in line for Gauteng’s e-panic button

Nurses and teachers in Gauteng are expected to be first in line to receive the e-panic buttons during the project’s pilot phase.

This was confirmed by Cooperative Governance MEC Mzi Khumalo on Monday.
The panic buttons, which were first mooted by Premier Panyaza Lesufi during his State of the Province address, would be the responsibility of the Department of Community Safety once the pilot project is done.
“Nurses and teachers have been identified as the most vulnerable citizens and more susceptible to crime,” Khumalo said in a post-budget briefing on Monday.
“For the purposes of this exercise, 8000 employees have been targeted.”
Khumalo says the provincial government’s e-panic button will assist in providing those in distress access to law enforcement and emergency health services.
“Again, our contribution in this regard will be the technology and once it is piloted and proven to be effective and efficient, the Department of Community Service will be responsible for the rollout.”
Earlier this year, Lesufi announced the government’s e-panic button as one of the measures to fight crime.
Among the crime-busting measures initiated by the Gauteng government are CCTV cameras which will be deployed across the province’s major roads and hotspot areas.
