The Gauteng Department of Education says its pencilled matric preliminary exams for October this year.
Grade 7s and 12s are expected to return to the classroom on Monday as national lockdown restrictions are eased into level 3.
Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi says there is a lot of ground to cover but remains optimistic that not all is lost.
He was part of a briefing by the provincial leadership in Johannesburg on Friday.
“We are going to go ahead with the preliminary examinations.
“Those preliminary examinations will be written and concluded in mid-October because these are important examinations because learners must be ready to use those results to apply for higher education institutions.”

The Commission says it has conducted independent monitoring of schools for readiness in all 9 provinces and consulted with various stakeholders, including teachers' unions and school governing bodies. The commission's Gushwell Brooks says the reopening of schools should be done in tandem with reasonable and adequate measures and efforts to safeguard the right to health of pupils and teachers.
Other grades will be phased in later in the year.
“The last component that is very crucial in terms of curriculum delivery is the examinations that are going to be written by other learners except learners in grade 12,” said Lesufi.
“We have extended the timetable for those examinations to be concluded mid-December and those results are going to be available in January.”
The decision to resume classes on Monday has been met with some concerns, but Lesufi assured parents that the department is ready.
