Matric results indicate ‘system stable’

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga says the 2023 matric results show the system remains stable, making it possible for the department to make the required improvements.
Speaking at the re-opening of Kgatoentle Secondary School in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria, on Wednesday, Motshekga said she had a glance at the unaudited results.
The minister is due to announce the national and provincial results on Thursday. Individual pupils will get their results on Friday.
In 2022, the national pass rate stood at 80.1%, compared with 76.4% in 2021.
"Having received the initial results, the system is stabilising,” Motshekga said on Wednesday.
"My biggest fear is when the system is not consistent. It shows that there is something wrong. The system is stable, and when the system is stable we are able to identify what are the weak points and what we need to strengthen," she said.
Motshekga is expected to have breakfast with the Class of 2023's top achievers on Thursday morning and later release the official examination results.
