Maya was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday, becoming the first woman to head the judiciary.

ANC spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi said Maya’s qualifications, judicial record, leadership qualities, and experience as a judge in various courts make her well-suited to lead the judiciary in South Africa.

"Through upholding the principles of judicial independence and integrity, the Deputy Chief Justice has played a crucial role in maintaining the credibility and trust in the judiciary,

"This has been vital for the rule of law and the functioning of democracy in South Africa, ensuring that the judiciary remains a robust check on the other branches of government,

"Justice Maya will be the first woman in South Africa to be appointed Chief Justice, affirming the ANC’s commitment to gender equality and advancing women’s leadership across all sectors and societal leadership structures,"

Meanwhile, the EFF said Maya's journey to becoming the first African woman to lead the Constitutional Court is a testament to her dedication to the rule of law.

"The EFF has consistently supported Justice Maya’s nomination, recognising her as a beacon of justice and an advocate for the marginalised. Our support for her candidacy was evident even during the nomination process,

"It is noteworthy that we have always prioritised her nomination over the current Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo, who only had two years until retirement when he was appointed," the party said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Action SA said the appointment is a breakthrough for the traditionally male-dominated judiciary,

"This serves as a beacon of progress and inspiration to women across South Africa. Her exemplary career, marked by dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice, sets a powerful example for aspiring female legal professionals.

"ActionSA believes that her presence on the bench will contribute significantly to a more balanced and representative judiciary, enhancing the perspectives and insights that shape our legal landscape.

"We have consistently advocated for the inclusion and advancement of women in leadership roles, recognising that diverse representation strengthens our institutions and enriches our democratic processes," the party said.
