Magole was gunned down along the R23 in Kempton Park.

Xhakaza described Mafole as a fearless champion for ethical governance.

He said the murder, amid a string of attacks on anti-corruption officials, signals a threat to the city’s renewal agenda.

The mayor urged police and state security to intervene urgently and arrest the killers.

Although the motive for the shooting remains unknown, Mafole was reportedly working on sensitive cases at the time of his death.

Speaking shortly after the shooting, city spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe said additional support will be available to staff who may need it.

"We understand that this news may cause concern among staff. We wish to assure you that the city is committed to ensuring a safe and secure working environment for all employees.

"We encourage all staff to remain vigilant, support one another, and report any suspicious activity to your line manager or the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department."

Before being appointed to Ekurhuleni, Mafole served as Investigations Manager at the Auditor General of South Africa.

The Southern African Institute of Government Auditors also paid tribute to Mafole, describing him as a dedicated public servant committed to excellence.

No arrests have been made.
