Mazibuko: Gauteng police stations have enough rape kits
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko has vowed that there are enough rape kits at the province’s various police stations.

Mazibuko made the comments during a virtual sitting of the Gauteng legislature on Tuesday.
“When we conducted visits to all 142 police stations across the province, to check the availability of rape kits as per the minister’s pronouncement.
“During these visits it was discovered that all police stations had rape kits available and it was further noted that these rape kits can last up to three years if they are not tampered with from the time of delivery.”

Last year, many of the country’s police stations were found to be without rape kits.
The Ministry of Police subsequently ordered some 98 000 evidence collection kits valued at close to R18 million.
Despite these efforts, police have admitted in Parliament that there is a DNA backlog of more than 28 000 samples at police forensic laboratories.
