Men must play role in preventing sexual harassment in the workplace, says Mchunu

Minister in the Department of Public Service and Administration Senzo Mchunu says men must play their role in preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.

Mchunu made the comments at a march against gender-based violence in Tshwane on Friday, where scores of public service employees protested against the scourge of abuse against women and children.

"What we are saying today, is that it must start with us as public service servants, that in the workplace we should ban all forms of sexual harassment.

"We are saying to our men and gentlemen who are in government offices, whether they are in the executive or appointed, please stop harassing anyone in your offices or areas of responsibility. Positions in government are applied for and you get interviewed and appointed. Finish and klaar," he said.

The recent crime stats that were released by the police for 2018/2019, revealed a shocking reality for the country's vulnerable that, cases reported due to sexual offences have increased by 4.6% from last year.

One such case is that of University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana, who was raped and bashed to death before her body was burned and dumped in Khayelitsha.

Mrwetyana was killed by a 42-year-old post office employee when she had gone to collect a parcel in August.

Her body was discovered days later, after she had gone missing.

Mchunu says if it were up to him, rapists would receive at least a minimum of a 25 year old sentence “as they don't belong in a free South Africa”.
