The Constitutional Court ruled in 2014 that the contract with the current social grants distributor, Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) was illegal and invalid.

In May 2017, after a drawn out legal battle, the Constitutional Court ordered SASSA and CPS to continue paying social grants until another entity is found.

The court also ordered Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini and SASSA  to file quarterly reports on SASSA’s progress to take over the payment of social grants.

Dlamini and SASSA are expected to file their second progress report to the court on Friday on the progress of the payment of social grants to the Constitutional Court.

The minister had until March 31 this year to explain why she should not be personally held liable for the cost of legal proceedings against the department.

In June, the Constitutional Court ordered that there be further investigation into whether Dlamini should be held personally liable for the social grants matter.
