Scores of consumers took their cash and credit cards to the Mall and Africa in Midrand in the hope of capitalising in this year's Black Friday specials.
There was little agreement among shoppers on this year’s deals, with some saying there were simply no money to be saved this year.
Speaking to Jacaranda FM News Faith Mpofu, who is a mother of a seven-year-old girl, said she was hoping to save more than what she did today.

"There is a difference in the television prices, so I saved a huge amount which is about R1500."

Businesswoman Vanessa Naidoo said she closed her business for the day in order to stock up on her needs for the year.
"I have a spreadsheet that I have compared and for the cheapest item I targeted different shops this is actually the first shop of the day. I'll be shopping throughout the day and closing my business throughout the day because it is an excellent saving. By the time I calculated it I think I saved R2500."

Meanwhile FNB says Black Friday can be worthwhile for consumers wishing to save a couple of rands.
"Black Friday can be worthwhile for people who plan their purchases ahead of time and some of the discounts can be meaningful in helping customers save on items of high value.”
But at the same time the bank cautioned customers to avoid overspending.
“It is important for consumers to remember that the festive season is very long and as such, it is crucial to manage budgets by avoiding excessive spending."
