Mogoeng cautions media on ‘driving particular narrative’

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng cautioned the media on the way it reports on certain stories during his 67 Minutes Leadership Talk in Kempton Park on Wednesday.
Mogoeng’s remarks come amid an uproar over the Sunday Times’ latest front page article.
The Sunday Times report, dealing with the South African Revenue Service (Sars) “rogue unit’ and the spat between Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, labelled former Sars law interpreter Keletso Bizoski Manyike a ‘dope smoking Rastafarian’.
Manyike was named as someone who was involved in the rogue unit as an agent and that Mkhwebane did not interview him, despite the fact that he was her “chief source” for the report she released.
However, Manyike has denied being part of the so-called rogue unit and clarified that he worked at SARS as as a law interpreter in the legal administration and policy division.
Mogoeng said some articles aim to drive a particular narrative.
“Some of the things that we read about other people, some of the things that some of our analysts would like to feed us with are designed to project some in a negative light and others in a positive light.”
