Mokgalapa remains at the helm in Tshwane

The Democratic Alliance's (DA) Stevens Mokgalapa and Katlego Mathebe will remain at the helm of Tshwane as mayor and speaker respectively, while the legal battle for control of the city rages on.

On Thursday the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) presented their arguments in the high court in Pretoria on why the resolutions passed by the Tshwane council last week should stand.

The council voted in favour of a vote of no confidence motion against Mokgalapa and Mathebe.

The DA argued that the resolutions of the special council meeting should be nullified because proper processes weren't followed.

Judge Niel Tuchten reserved judgment, saying he would take into consideration arguments made by each party.

The DA’s Gauteng leader John Moodey says he remains confident the court will rule in their favour.

"What it does do is that it leaves the situation unchanged that means Stevens Mokgalapa remains the executive mayor and Katlego Mathebe remains the speaker. That is where we are at and of course we are waiting for the judge to pass his final judgment on the matter," says Moodey.

"We are fairly confident that he will rule in our favour and he will declare what happened a few weeks ago null and void."

Tshwane residents will continue to wait with baited breath to learn whether or not they will have a new mayor next year.
