Mokgoro not resigning as MPL complicates matters, says Duarte

North West Premier Job Mokgoro handed in his resignation on Thursday, but said he would remain a member of the provincial legislature.
The ANC’s North West interim committee wants to replace Mokgoro with veteran Bushy Maape, but the premier refused to leave office until he was granted a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The two politicians met on Wednesday.
ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Daurte says Mokgoro not leaving the legislature complicates the issue.
“On the issue of North West, yes, we understand that comrade Job Mokgoro has not resigned from the legislature. That does complicate matters quite a bit, because in order for him to have become a member of the legislature Supra Mahumapelo had to resign from the legislature and make space for him.
“The interim provincial committee is currently discussing the matter to find a way of dealing with it. However, they have appointed from the executive an acting premier which is correct and a legal thing to do.”
Duarte said the ANC has until 15 September to resolve the issue.
