Day Zero, when the City of Cape Town will run out of water, is predicted to take place on April 12.

But Mokonyane is adamant that it is not a forgone conclusion.

"Day Zero can be avoided if all of us become positive, if we move beyond politics and if all of us appreciate that the realities of climate change are upon us.”

Mokoyane says merely throwing money at the issue will not solve anything.

"We need every idea, every innovation, we need to adapt and reprioritise, but most importantly to take this challenge as an opportunity that will make South Africa have water security beyond the urgency of this crisis."

Mokoyane says in the past the country successfully averted similar situations in several other cities, including eThekwini.

"We have proved many nay-sayers wrong, even when there industrial area's in Richards Bay almost collapsed and when eThekwini almost shut down, whose restrictions are still working to this day.”

Mokoyane says experts from eThekwini are now working with the City of Cape Town to ensure Day Zero does not become a reality.

She called on consumers in the city to adhere to the Level 6B water restrictions,  saying they need to ensure there is water for all and not just for some.

"This can be achieved when we prevent the commodification of water because water is a constitutional right.”
