The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety says it has recorded a total of 750 road crashes since the beginning of December.
Spokesperson Zandile Mandlazi says over 150 lives were lost in the province, a slight declined compared to the same period last year.
"There is a decline of 11.3% on fatalities as compared to the previous year during the same period. Most of the crashes were recorded on the N4 road followed by the R40 and the R573. Other roads include the N2, R538, N11, R38, N12 and R555."
She says most crashes are caused by speeding, dangerous overtaking and reckless driving.
A total of 848 motorists were arrested for various offences, including driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding the speed limit, reckless and negligent driving, overloading and false documentation.
Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi is expected to announce the national death toll before the end of January.
