Residents of Gomora in Pretoria West took have taken to the streets, blocking roads with rocks and burning tyres.
Police spokesperson Tumisang Moloto says residents started gathering along Van Der Hoff road in Hercules at around 3 am.
"We managed to arrest three suspects for public violence and in the process a truck was set alight," he says.
He says the public order police have been deployed, while members of the South African Police Service are also still patrolling the area.
"We are advising motorists to make use of alternative routes like DF Malan. Please avoid using the Daspoort tunnel," he says.
It is not clear exactly what sparked the protest.
