More research needed on Covid-19 vaccine reluctance among men - expert

Dr Aslam Dasoo from the Progressive Health Forum says more research is needed to establish why some men are seemingly reluctant to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

Concerns have been raised over the number of men, especially in Gauteng, pitching up for their jabs.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura revealed on Wednesday that 57% of vaccines were administered to women.

“I think it may lie in how gender differences in risk-taking behaviour manifest,” says Dasoo.

“If you were to take a look at motor vehicle insurance premiums on women tend to be lower because they take less risk and same apply in Covid-19. Women are more sensitive to the risks posed by Covid-19 and want to protect themselves.

“This is a natural thing. What we don’t know  because research hasn’t been done are the exact reasons why men are seemingly reluctant from taking the vaccine. We do have a very strong toxic masculinity structure in the country and men feel less inclined to be at risk of this and it may well be playing a part, I also don’t think the difference at this point is significant.

“I think research on this does need to take place, we are not certain why this is  the case.”
