More University of Limpopo students arrested over looting
Three more University of Limpopo students have been arrested as police continue on the clamp-down on students accused of burning and looting at the campus.
Police said late on Tuesday that three more suspects were arrested after investigations linked them to looting and burning of food outlets on campus.
Colonel Ronel Otto said police investigations linked the suspects to the looting, which left campus shops without any stork.
Thirteen student were arrested on Monday evening after violence erupted during protests.
Students went on rampage and vandalised six cafeterias and national outlet restaurant after the institution said it could not commit to their demands for free education.
The university remains closed.
The students vented their anger on buildings, including security guards rooms at the Turfloop campus in Mankweng east of Polokwane.
Student leaders told the principal and vice-chancellor Prof Mahlo Mokgalong that because he failed to make any assurances that the university will provide free education and write-off historic debts the institution “will be ungovernable”.
Students at the campus had joined the national university students’ campaign #FeesMustFall protests. The students had been protesting against proposed fees hikes for next year.
However, on Friday President Jacob Zuma issued a moratorium on fees hikes for next year, just days after Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande had capped them at six percent.
The protests did not end, instead students are now demanding “free education”. - ANA
