The month-long strike lead to severe backlogs in autopsies, leaving many families unable to bury their loved ones.

Gauteng Health MEC, Gwen Ramokgopa, says all forensic pathology officers returned to work on Thursday.

“I am pleased to announce that after weeks of challenges and inconveniences to bereaved families, the strike by forensic pathology officers is over in all our facilities. We have no backlogs in a number of them,” says Ramokgopa.

There are still backlogs in autopsies in three facilities in the province.

“We are concerned about the facilities in Roodepoort, Johannesburg and Germiston. We are looking at measures to fast-track the processes. We are confident that in the next three working days the backlogs will be dealt with,” says Ramokgopa.

Ramokgopa again apologised to families who have had to wait for post postmortems to be conducted, so they can lay their loved ones to rest.
