Police
in Hlanganani in Limpopo are investigating
cases of murder and attempted murder after a 35-year-old woman allegedly
poisoned herself and her two young children
on Monday night.
Police spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo says the woman was making dinner when she added the poison.
“It is alleged that the woman prepared food for herself and her two minor daughters aged 2 and 6 years-old respectively. She then allegedly used a poisonous substance to contaminate the food. After eating the food, the woman and her children reportedly started vomiting and were rushed to Rotterdam clinic where the youngest child was certified dead-on arrival.”
Mojapelo says the mother passed away on the way to hospital.
“The woman was transferred to Kgapane hospital but unfortunately she passed on along the way while being transported to the hospital for medical attention.”
The 6-year-old child survived the poisoning and is in a stable condition.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the motive for the alleged poisoning was possibly due to financial burdens; however, investigations are ongoing.
