The City of Tshwane is on edge as the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) prepare to oust mayor Solly Msimanga.

Earlier the Democratic Alliance (DA) marching in support of Msimanga whilst ANC members voiced their opposition to Msimanga following a night vigil.

The political mercury has been rising in the capital since early on Thursday morning ahead of what is expected to be a heated council sitting.

The ANC and the EFF are expected to table separate motions of no confidence against the mayor.

The parties have levelled several allegations against Pretoria's first citizen including corruption, nepotism and a lack of consultation.

But Msimanga says there is not a shred of evidence to support their claims.

"Even to say that money has been syphoned. I challenge them openly that if they have any evidence whatsoever they must go and lay criminal charges. Or expose in the media and show the documents so that you can say this money came from this project and it went to the DA to fund the Solly Msimanga premier candidacy.

"Those are things that are political opportunism and the people aren't stupid. People will see through this and history will indeed be the judge at the end of the day."

In a speech to DA supporters ahead of the council sitting, party leader Mmusi Maimane compared the motion to state capture.
