Motorists be warned: Vehicle licence disk deadline is Tuesday

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned that Tuesday is the final day for motorists to renew license discs that expired between March and May without incurring penalties.

The deadline for renewals was set for 31 August with a further 21-day grace period without incurring any penalties for late payment.

The RTMC's Simon Zwane says motorists who fail to renew vehicle licences by end of business on Tuesday will be liable to pay a penalty fee.

"Penalties are calculated at 10 per cent of the annual licencing fees per month. They also run the risk of receiving traffic fines of up to R1000 if stopped by traffic officers while operating an unlicensed motor vehicle on a public road.”

All learner's licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits which expired between 26 March and the end of August will be valid until the end of January.

"It must be taken into account that no further extensions will be granted and those who fail to renew on time will have to pay applicable penalties or face the necessary repercussions for late renewal,” says the Department of Transport’s spokesperson Ayanda Allie Paine.
