The warning comes amid community protests in Slurry and the Matsatseng Village on Monday.

Provincial police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said angry members of the community barricaded roads between Mahikeng and Zeerust earlier in the day.

The reason for the protest is unclear.

Mokgwabone says while the roads are now open to traffic, motorists need to drive with caution.

“We can confirm that the Public Order Police, together with police members from the Ottoshoop police station, are currently monitoring the protest action, where members of the community barricaded roads earlier today with objects.

“Both roads are currently open and traffic is flowing. However, motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and cooperate with the law enforcement officers who are there to monitor the situation,” says Mokgwabone.

Mokgola residents recently embarked on protests after a failure by the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality to live up to their promises of restoring water supply. This, after the community was left without water for weeks.

The municipality had cited infrastructure vandalism, sharing water with livestock, and population growth as challenges to providing reliable and clean water.
