Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said this will be done to avoid unnecessary panic.

“On whether to shut down schools, we will be guided by health if we have reached that stage. On the other hand, we constantly in communication with our provinces, to say as far as the Health Department’s assessment we have not reached a level where we can panic.”

The country recorded its third positive test for COVID-19 on Sunday.

Grayston Preparatory in the north of Johannesburg decided to shut down the doors on Monday.

It is believed a teacher at the school had been in contact with the group of ten South Africans, who returned from Italy on a ski trip.

Two of the people in the group tested positive for the virus.

The teacher has since been isolated.
