Motshekga says millions of rand needed for Vuwani schools
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, has described Vuwani as a disaster area.

Motshegka was addressing the media ahead of her budget debate in Parliament on Tuesday and said she wants money from government to help rebuild the 24 schools torched by residents.
The protest stricken area was shut down last week, following a court decision to dismiss the case by Vuwani residents against the Municipal Demarcation Board.
The decision was earlier taken to amalgamate the Vuwani area with Malamulele under one municipality.
Motshekga said it would cost the basic education department hundreds of millions of rand to rebuild and re-open the schools and that government resources would have to be accessed to address the situation.
"Every day must be a teaching day if [we are] to complete the curriculum...time is really of essence in this sector, so we can't underestimate the fact that learners have not been now at school for some time and, obviously, this week I don't expect schooling to take place in Vuwani," Motshekga said.
Classes in the area have been suspended with no word yet as to when schools will reopen. For that to happen, the area must be normalised.
Quality assurer Umalusi will now be roped in to try and recover records destroyed in the violence and mayhem.
