Mpumalanga MEC Mandla Msibi is set to return to court in Mbombela on Tuesday for a formal bail application.
The National Prosecuting Authority in Mpumalanga has confirmed Msibi appeared in court on Monday on a charge of murder.
Msibi was elected the Mpumalanga MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs in February 2021 and has been a member of the provincial legislature since 2019.
“The NPA can confirm that the Mpumalanga MEC, Mandla Msibi appeared before the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court today on two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder,” says NPA spokesperson Monica Nyuswa.
This while African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated the step-aside rule will come into effect when a member is accused of wrongdoing.
“For us it fairly straightforward. When somebody has been arrested and charged, you have to step aside from the position that you occupy and you got to be answerable to the integrity commission,” he said while campaigning in the Northern Cape.
“Our renewal process is such that these types of things are handle automatically in terms of the discipline and values of our organisation to maintain the integrity of the African National Congress.”
