Police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi says two of the victims - aged between 25 and 35 - were burnt to death for allegedly robbing a bakery.

The pair, together with a third suspect, were allegedly caught robbing a delivery van.

"The community hunted them and found them asleep in a shack and they were burnt, including that shack,” Hlathi says.

One of the men was also accused of raping a woman.

"The community then assaulted this man and when police came they took him to the hospital. Unfortunately he died on the way to the hospital."

Hlathi urged community members to not take the law into their own hands.

"What grievances you might have its important to report such grievances to the police."
