N1 accident death toll rises

The death toll of the N1 accident has risen.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Edna Mamonyane says a seventh person has passed away. 



She says six people died at the scene. 



"The seventh person has died in hospital."



Eight people were injured - six sustained serious injuries.

The freeway has been reopened after nearly four hours.



Mamonyane says the accident happened after the taxi's left rear tyre burst, causing the taxi to overturn. 



Meanwhile, Gauteng premier David Makhura has visited the scene. 



He says he's saddened by the tragic accident. 



"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased who lost their lives in this tragic accident," Makhura says.



The Gauteng premier says the MECs for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi and Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane will visit the injured in hospital.



Makhura has appealed to drivers to be patient.



He also urged drivers to always exercise extra caution on the roads and ensure that they obey all rules of the road.
