This comes after a 19-year-old male and a female in her 20s were shot and killed on the side of the Putfontein road on the N12 in Benoni, east of Johannesburg.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Lungelo Dlamini, says their vehicle ran out of diesel and was parked on the on-ramp, whilst they were waiting for help.

Three unknown men attacked them.

Dlamini adds the three suspects tried to burn the vehicle after killing the two youngsters, but community members got a fire extinguisher and prevented the car from catching fire.

"The only thing that was stolen, it's only suspected that it's a cell phone, but we don't know why these three suspects tried to burn their vehicle."

Gauteng Community Police Board's Reza Patel has described the incident as "barbaric and uncivilised".

Patel has also urged residents to join their local community policing forums.

"One has to belong to a CPF group or contact the police, contact the metro police, have some sort attention brought to the fact that you are stuck on the side of the road so that you are not alone in your issue.

"This particular thing will not go unattended. The provincial commissioner has given me his undertaking that he will hunt these persons and he will find them."
