The suspects had escaped on foot into a bush near Queen Nandi Drive - prompting a massive search from both the sky and on the ground.

The incident resulted in a crash involving several vehicles. A woman had to be freed from her car and treated for her injuries.

The police's Jay Naicker says officers received information about a suspected hijacked vehicle that was going to be used in a robbery.

He says the vehicle was spotted at a petrol station near the highway.

"When police officers approached the vehicle, the suspects fled on the N2, Northbound. Police then gave chase. The suspects then opened fire on police members. Our members then returned fire. In the process, the suspects used their vehicle to push the police vehicle off the road and onto the oncoming lane.

"Both vehicles then moved over onto the Southbound lane. Police and suspects continued to shoot at each other. Two suspects died on scene. A third one was arrested with injuries and is receiving attention at this stage. Two of our police officers in the police vehicle were also injured," he says.

The vehicle the suspects had been driving is believed to have been hijacked in Reservoir Hills at the beginning of the week.
