Spokesperson for N3TC Thania Dhoogra says 1 800 vehicles per hour were recorded on the northbound side towards Gauteng, while 1 200 vehicles southbound toward KwaZulu-Natal were recorded, per hour,  during the day on Friday.

Dhoogra says this traffic pattern is expected to continue on Saturday and is likely to increase further on Sunday.

“Road users are reminded to please remain patient and alert while behind the wheel as high traffic volumes will likely result in congestion and delays along the route. Should it be required, law-enforcement officials may implement traffic control interventions at strategic locations on the entry to route to manage the flow of traffic.”

Meanwhile, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has urged all workers returning home after their holidays to do so safely.

Cosatu’s Matthew Parks says they all must avoid overconsuming alcohol especially when they drive and even walk.

He says families and the nation cannot afford to lose more loved ones or breadwinners.

Parks adds that all bus and taxi drivers must be allowed time to rest and avoid speeding.
