N3 Truck torching could be economic sabotage: Ramaphosa
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the torching of six trucks on the N3 toll route on Sunday was concerning as it seemed to be economic sabotage.
The route in the area of Van Reenen's Pass had to be closed to allow for police investigation to be conducted and the lanes to be cleaned before being open to motorists on Sunday afternoon.
The arsonists fled the scene and are still at large.
Ramaphosa was addressing the media on the outcomes of the ANC's National Executive Committee meeting in Boksburg on Sunday afternoon.
“I am concerned about these activities that take place that have a negative impact on our economy and its almost like an economic sabotage because burning six trucks on the main artery of our country, in terms of the economy is concerning.
“The intelligence agencies are going to be giving me a report on that and the police will be taking steps to make sure that we forestall whatever follow-up activity that those behind this may well be planning”.
On Sunday night, five trucks were also torched on the N4 in the Waterval Boven area of Mpumalanga.
The department of Community Safety confirmed that the incident was not related to any service delivery protest.
